Xvid and DivX on Windows 11
Old AVI files encoded with Xvid or DivX often play without sound or not at all in the built-in apps.

Do I need a codec pack on Windows 11?
Not for basic MP4 or MP3 files - Windows 11 plays those by itself.
You do need extra codecs for HEVC/H.265 video, AC3, E-AC3 or DTS audio, older Xvid and DivX AVI files, and many MKV releases. X Codec Pack adds all of them in one install.

The new Media Player app in Windows 11 uses its own decoders, so open files in MPC-HC for full format support.
How do I play HEVC (H.265) videos for free?
Install X Codec Pack and open the file in MPC-HC or another DirectShow player. LAV Filters decodes HEVC, using your GPU when it supports it.
There is no need to buy the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
What is the difference between the standard and full download?
The standard installer (25.4 MB) contains the codec filters only.
The full download (43.6 MB) also bundles the MPC-HC 2.8.2 media player - pick it if you do not have a player yet.
