About MPC DVD Video Decoder

MPC DVD Video Decoder is a DirectShow filter that decodes MPEG-2 video streams from DVD sources, enabling software DVD playback in any DirectShow-compatible media player on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Modern Windows versions no longer include a DVD decoder by default. Since Windows 8, Microsoft removed the built-in MPEG-2 decoder that Windows 7 provided, meaning DVD playback fails without a third-party decoder installed. MPC DVD Video Decoder fills this gap, providing full MPEG-2 and DVD video decoding with no paid upgrade required.

The decoder supports standard DVD resolutions up to 480i/576i (NTSC and PAL), interlaced deinterlacing, and integrates with the DVD Navigator filter to handle disc navigation, menus and chapter seeking. It pairs with MPC VTS Reader for VIDEO_TS folder playback without a physical disc.

Installed to System32 (64-bit) and SysWOW64 (32-bit) and registered automatically with DirectShow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not include a DVD decoder by default. Microsoft removed the built-in MPEG-2 decoder starting with Windows 8. Without a third-party decoder such as MPC DVD Video Decoder, Windows cannot decode the video stream from a DVD and playback fails. Installing X Codec Pack adds MPC DVD Video Decoder and resolves this.

No. VLC includes its own internal MPEG-2 decoder and does not use DirectShow filters. MPC DVD Video Decoder is only needed for DirectShow-based players such as Windows Media Player, MPC-HC and PotPlayer. If you exclusively use VLC for DVD playback you do not need this filter.
Yes. MPC DVD Video Decoder handles both NTSC (480i, used in North America and Japan) and PAL (576i, used in Europe and Australia) DVD video standards. Both are based on MPEG-2 video and are decoded identically by the filter.
MPC Video Decoder is a general-purpose video decoder that handles H.264, H.265, MPEG-4 and other modern formats from file sources. MPC DVD Video Decoder is specifically optimised for MPEG-2 video from DVD sources and integrates with the DVD Navigator for menu and chapter handling. Both are included in X Codec Pack.
Yes. It is an open-source component from the MPC-HC project. It installs MpcDvdVideoDecoder.ax to System32 and SysWOW64 and registers it as a COM server. It contains no adware or spyware and can be removed cleanly via the uninstaller.
